Bad performance review. Any advice

Lewis

Hi all, I hope someone here may be able to advise.

For the past 2 months I have been employed at a design practice, But last week I had a performance review which wasn't great. This was totally out of the blue and the director said he does not know if they will be able to confirm my employment going forward.

I have no idea what went wrong. My initial interview was very good and they were excited to have me.

Is it just me or other have had similar experience? What options do i have? any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Well, what did they say at the performance review? Can you go into this in more detail?

They said that I did not appreciate the impact that some of my actions had on the project, that my Autocad skills are not what they expected, Started pointing out all the mistakes I've made etc etc over the last 2 months.

They said that during my initial interview I came across really well, but the experience I showed was suited to a more junior role than what they had in mind. It was very negative.

I don' believe my work lacked or I would have been told prior to a review. I was stunned and felt myself lose confidence in my work.

What did they say about your strengths? Did they point out any areas of improvement?

No mention of strengths or anything I achieved. You would think that there was good feedback as well and in a review there would be some kind of balance but there wasn't.

No areas of improvement were discussed.

I think you have to be guided by your gut feeling, is what they're saying fair?

The only thing to do for now is wait and see if they want to keep you on or not.

@sianb

Not sure if they were fair. If there were serious issues they should have said something in the first few weeks.

I don't want to waste time. It's almost 3 months if they're going to get rid of me I'd rather move on now.

Have you spoken with your colleagues? Asked them what their review was like?

Thank you for the suggestion.

I have spoken with two co-workers asking if it was just me and they had mixed responses but generally neither of them had raving reviews, and some of the people have been there for years.

Sometimes it's just a way of keeping you on your toes.

One of them mentioned some rumours about how there isn't enough new work coming in.

Hello @Lewis,

to answer your actual question, whether others have had similar experiences largely depends on the firm. It is not unheard of for some businesses to hire people and let them go a few months later because there is not enough work (unfortunately that is usually down to lack of proper forecast).

But, again, that depends on who the firm is owned by.

Most companies have a probationary period of around 3 months, if that is your case as well you would be within that period.

The implications of that may vary from firm to firm though.
