Architecture is the practice of designing buildings, places and spaces. Architects use science, art and technology to create the built environment.

Contemporary architecture seeks to integrate environmental and sustainable design principles with advanced technologies to produce innovative and beautiful buildings. Unlike many universities, we combine periods of professional work experience within our courses. This gives you the opportunity to benefit from a combination of academic and practical study. Throughout the course, through complex design challenges, you'll develop your design skills and learn how cultural, historical and socio-economic factors inform design decisions.

Studying architecture at Bath: The Basil Spence competition

Our flagship design competition, the Basil Spence project, is the opportunity to fully explore the relationship between structure, environment, architecture and building construction. The brief changes each year, but is always based on a real scenario with a focus on sustainability. Working in teams of four or five, our architecture and civil engineering students develop their solutions together over eight weeks by discussing drawings, models and calculations.

First year group design project: Reciprocal

Throughout their civil engineering and architecture degrees, our students work on group projects in cross-disciplinary teams. For their very first project at university, Isobel, Greg, Arun and their team designed and built a structure using limited materials and based on one interpretative word: reciprocal.

"It was really good fun. When you've got a shared experience with people you don't know, it builds the relationships quite quickly. I think it was a great first project." — Greg Ferguson, BSc Architecture
