Ive been looking for a way to explode a block and it just won't let me but i tried with a different block and it works so I would be interested to hear how others deal with this also.

That would be correct behaviour if the block is protected.
Go to:
Insert tab > Block Editor > choose <current drawing> in the drop down list
Now you are in the edit phase, you should have a properties bar on your screen (mine is to the left where my layers bar is). If you click on that to open you can change the option to yes.
