H&S manager not onsite

Alan53

Hi I work onsite and my H&S manager has been furloghed for 60% of his time and I'm worried that nobody onsite is monitoring properly the situation. I'm worried about people being too close to each other and I heard of a lot of sites shutting down because of outbreak.
If people responsible for H&S are not available, isn't my employer breaking the law?
Kind regards

This doesn't answer your question but construction sites are not in lockdown so it would be correct in thinking that H&S would be working at full capacity to ensure that the sites are safe for workers......this is not the case as you have stated, and is extremely worrying.

The government has not thought through this process fully, I understand keeping the construction industry open but the steps to ensure that safety measures are in place should also need to be addressed. The new variant is 50% more contagious so working in close proximity sometimes less than a 1m apart would be something to think about.

Hello Alan,

This link should give you a flavour for what UK legislation says: in essence, as long as that your H&S manager did carry out the latest assessment regarding provisions to take for Covid-19, he does not have to be on site all the time.

If your H&S manager normally keeps an eye out for trouble that's good, but when you have concerns that precautions such as keeping at a minimum distance are not being adhered to and he's not available, you should talk to your boss / employer, given they are ultimately responsible for the health and safety of all people on-site.
